1. Scope and who we are
This Privacy Policy explains how Youtopia.social ("Youtopia," "we," "us," or "our"), based in Los Angeles, California, collects, uses, discloses, and retains personal information when you visit youtopia.social or use a Youtopia website, mobile application, community feature, or related service that links to this Policy (collectively, the "Services"). It also explains the choices and rights available to you.
This Policy does not govern a third-party website, app, payment processor, Cafe location, or service that has its own privacy notice, even when Youtopia links to or works with it.
2. Information we collect
The information we collect depends on how you use Youtopia. It may include:
- Account and identity information, such as your email address, username, display name, password credential in protected form, verification status, original account creation date, and account or policy-acceptance records.
- Profile and community information, such as your photo, biography, location, interests, better-future statement, privacy choices, connections, follows, blocks, Cause memberships, Cause roles, and information you choose to make visible.
- Content and communications, including posts, comments, reactions, images, documents, messages, feedback, reports, replies, drafts submitted to us, and related audience or moderation information.
- Cause and Action activity, such as applications, approvals, categories, membership, administrative permissions, progress, assignments, evidence, events, and discussion activity.
- Technical and usage information, such as IP address, browser and device type, operating system, language, referring page, requested pages, timestamps, cookie or session identifiers, security events, approximate location inferred from IP, and diagnostic or performance data.
- Support, safety, and legal information, including correspondence, attachments, report details, verification information, appeals, records needed to investigate misuse, and information required to respond to rights or legal requests.
- Future Cafe and transaction information, if those features launch, such as location, order details, pickup or delivery information, membership-discount eligibility, transaction status, and limited payment metadata supplied by a payment processor. Do not send full payment-card details through posts, messages, or feedback.
- Future mobile-app information, if you install an app, such as app version, device or advertising settings, push-notification token, crash information, and information from device permissions you choose to grant, such as camera, photo library, notifications, or precise location.
3. Where information comes from
We collect information directly from you; automatically from your browser, device, and use of the Services; from other members who interact with or report content; from service providers that help us operate the Services; and from public or lawful sources used for safety, verification, or legal compliance.
For existing members, we may migrate eligible account, profile, content, relationship, message, media, group or Cause membership, privacy, and original join-date records from the prior Youtopia service. Migration is intended to preserve—not broaden—the original audience and privacy of that information. Data that cannot be mapped safely may be restricted, quarantined, or excluded pending review.
4. How we use information
We use personal information to:
- Create and secure accounts; authenticate members; maintain sessions; recover access; and preserve original account history.
- Provide profiles, feeds, Causes, Actions, roles, discussions, messaging, notifications, search, feedback, administrative tools, and other requested features.
- Apply audience, privacy, blocking, membership, and role permissions and prevent private information from being shown to an unauthorized person.
- Personalize and organize content, suggest relevant people or Causes, and remember settings without using personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
- Moderate content, investigate reports, detect spam, fraud, abuse, security incidents, and prohibited conduct, enforce our policies, and protect people, rights, and the Services.
- Communicate about accounts, security, policies, transactions, support, and—when you choose—community or product notifications.
- Measure reliability and accessibility, troubleshoot, test, research, and improve the Services using information reasonably necessary for those purposes.
- Comply with law, respond to valid legal process and rights requests, preserve evidence, resolve disputes, and enforce agreements.
- Provide future Cafe, mobile, payment, or location features that you request, subject to any supplemental notice presented at collection.
5. Public, member, and private information
Your chosen audience affects who can see content. Public profiles, Causes, posts, comments, member lists, roles, or evidence may be visible to anyone and may appear in search engines. Member-only information is intended for signed-in members or a narrower permitted audience. Private messages are intended for their participants.
No audience control can prevent an authorized viewer from taking a screenshot, downloading media, or resharing information. Avoid posting information you do not want others to retain. Images and documents may contain hidden metadata, including location or author information; remove sensitive metadata before uploading.
Authorized personnel may access nonpublic information when reasonably necessary for support, security, moderation, legal compliance, or maintaining the Services, subject to access controls and confidentiality obligations.
6. Cookies and similar technologies
Youtopia uses cookies and similar local technologies that are necessary to keep you signed in, protect requests from forgery, remember preferences, maintain security, and support core functionality. A temporary cookie may be used to confirm that your browser accepts cookies. Authentication and preference cookies may persist for different periods depending on whether you choose a remember-me feature; logout clears applicable active authentication cookies.
We may use limited first-party measurement or diagnostic technologies to understand performance and improve the Services. We do not currently use third-party advertising cookies or track your activity across unrelated websites to build advertising profiles. If that practice changes, we will update this Policy and provide any notice or choice required by law.
Browser settings can block or delete cookies, but strictly necessary features may stop working. Because there is no uniform industry standard for browser "Do Not Track" signals, the Services do not respond to them as a separate control. We honor legally recognized opt-out preference signals when they apply; because we do not currently sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, such a signal does not change that practice.
7. Embedded content and links
Posts and pages may include links or embedded media from other services. Loading or interacting with third-party content may allow that provider to receive technical information, set its own cookies, or track interaction under its privacy policy—much as if you visited that provider directly. Review the provider’s policy before using the content. Where practical, we may use a click-to-load or similar choice for nonessential embeds.
8. When we disclose information
We may disclose personal information in these circumstances:
- To the public, members, Cause participants, message recipients, or another audience according to your actions, settings, and the feature’s design.
- To hosting, database, storage, email, security, customer-support, analytics, accessibility, payment, app-distribution, and other vendors that process information for us under appropriate contractual restrictions.
- To Cause administrators or role-holders when needed to administer membership, permissions, Actions, events, reports, or content within their authorized scope.
- To law enforcement, regulators, courts, rights holders, affected parties, or advisers when we reasonably believe disclosure is required by law or necessary to protect rights, safety, security, property, or the integrity of the Services.
- In connection with a financing, merger, acquisition, reorganization, sale of assets, or similar transaction, subject to appropriate safeguards and notice where required.
- At your direction or with your consent.
9. No sale of personal information
Youtopia does not sell personal information for money and does not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not disclose information that directly identifies you to advertisers for their own advertising. If these practices change, we will update this Policy before the change and provide any legally required opt-out mechanism.
10. Retention and deletion
We retain information for only as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described here, including providing the Services, preserving account history, maintaining the integrity of conversations and Causes, meeting safety and fraud-prevention needs, resolving disputes, and complying with legal, tax, accounting, and contractual obligations. Retention depends on the type of information, its sensitivity, the audience and feature, whether an account is active, and applicable requirements.
When you delete content or close an account, it may be removed from active display before it is fully removed from backups and recovery systems. Some records may be retained or de-identified when needed for security, abuse prevention, legal holds, transaction records, audit integrity, or the rights of other people. Content others have copied or independently reshared is outside our control. We will not keep personal information longer than reasonably necessary solely because storage is available.
11. Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, know about, correct, delete, or obtain a portable copy of personal information; restrict or object to certain processing; withdraw consent; opt out of certain sales, sharing, profiling, or targeted advertising; and appeal a denied request. You may also manage profile visibility, communications, notification preferences, connections, blocks, and Cause participation through available settings.
Submit a request through Youtopia’s contact channel. We may verify your identity and authority before acting and may retain a record of the request. An authorized agent may submit a request where law permits, but we may require proof of authority and direct identity confirmation. Rights are subject to exceptions—for example, when information is needed for security, legal compliance, free expression, another person’s rights, or completion of a requested service. We will not unlawfully discriminate against you for exercising a privacy right.
12. California privacy information
California residents may have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended, including rights to know, access, correct, delete, and obtain information about categories of collection, sources, purposes, and disclosure; to opt out of sale or sharing; to limit certain uses of sensitive personal information; and to receive equal service after exercising a right. These rights apply only to the extent the law covers Youtopia and the requested information.
The categories described in Section 2 are the categories we have collected or may collect, the purposes in Section 4 explain why, and Sections 5 and 8 identify the categories of recipients. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. California’s "Shine the Light" law may permit residents to request information about certain disclosures for third parties’ own direct-marketing purposes; Youtopia does not currently make such disclosures.
13. Security
We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed for the nature of the information and the Services. These include measures such as protected password credentials, encrypted transport, restricted access, session and request protections, rate limits, audit records, backups, and vendor review where appropriate. No system, transmission, or storage method is completely secure. You are responsible for using a strong unique password, protecting your devices, and reporting suspected unauthorized access promptly.
14. Children’s privacy
The Services are not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly permit a child under 16 to create or use an account. Registration requires an age-eligibility confirmation rather than a date of birth so we do not collect more personal information than the launch service needs. If we learn that an under-16 child provided personal information, we will take appropriate steps to remove it and close the account unless a legally compliant exception applies. A parent or guardian who believes a child provided information should contact us. Additional age restrictions may apply to transactions, Cafe features, events, or mobile-app distribution.
15. Processing in the United States
Youtopia is operated from the United States. If you use the Services from another country, information may be transferred to and processed in the United States and other locations where service providers operate, which may have different data-protection laws. We use safeguards required by applicable law for covered transfers.
16. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy as the Services, vendors, or law change. We will post the new effective date and provide additional notice or request consent when required. Materially different uses of information will not be applied retroactively without an appropriate legal basis or notice.
17. Contact us
Questions, privacy requests, and concerns may be submitted through Youtopia’s contact channel or by emailing support@youtopia.social. This address is Youtopia’s privacy contact for access, correction, deletion, and other privacy requests. Please describe the request and the account or content involved without sending passwords, full payment-card details, government identifiers, or unnecessary sensitive information. Safety emergencies should be directed to local emergency services.
